TURTLE ISLAND QUARTET at 40
Behind Turtle Island Quartet’s innovative sound lies an unexpected inspiration: Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 No. 2. In celebration of Turtle Island Quartet’s 40th Anniversary in 2026-2027, Beethoven in Motion explores the origins and evolution of this ensemble’s singular sound.
The performance will feature double-grammy winning Turtle Island Quartet, performing David Balakrishnan’s original compositions, and Harlem Quartet, performing the original Beethoven Quartet. The stage will be arranged with the quartets facing each other, with lighting clearly framing the action from one ensemble to another. Semi-scripted commentary between movements will provide insight into the music and its historical context. The program will alternate between Balakrishnan’s original works and individual movements of Beethoven. The concert will culminate in the Octet finale, bringing both quartets together on stage.
An alternative program format for more traditional audiences will also be offered, which bookends the Full Beethoven with all original Balakrishnan works on the first half, and the Octet to round out the program.
